The 6.20 am BBC Radio 4 Business News may seem unlikely to raise blood pressure towards the red line, but to this listener, it has achieved that feat twice this year. First Aviva, then Legal & General, boasted about how they will…

New model describes wave behavior in straits, predicts killer waves

(Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech)) A Skoltech researcher has developed a theoretical model of wave formation in straits and channels that accounts for nonlinear effects in the presence of a coastline. This research can improve wave prediction, making maritime travel safer and protecting coastline infrastructure.

AI tames data volumes for automated driving

(Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) ) Large data volumes arise when testing highly automated vehicles. The new KIsSME project reduces data volumes to save storage capacity, power, and evaluation expenditure and, at the same time, at compressing data to enhance vehicle safety. Algorithms based on AI select data in the driving mode and sort them into scenario catalogs. Within the project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) supplies data from test drives and simulations.

Microbiome boost may help corals resist bleaching

(King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST)) Providing corals with cocktails of natural probiotics could enhance their tolerance to stress and reduce mortality in coral bleaching events.

Can air pollution help us find alien life?

Data show lower daily temperatures lead to higher transmission of COVID-19

(University of Louisville) Understanding the impact of seasonal temperature changes on transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is an important factor in reducing the virus’s spread in the years to come. Researchers compared daily low temperature data and logged cases of COVID-19 in 50 countries in the Northern Hemisphere between Jan. 22 and April 6, 2020. Their research, published this week in PLOS ONE, showed that as temperatures rose, the rate of new cases of COVID-19 decreased.
