How Scientists are Managing to Trap the World’s Coldest Plasma in a Magnetic Bottle

Physicists have discovered a way to trap the world’s coldest plasma in a magnetic bottle, a technological achievement that could advance research into clean energy, space weather, and astrophysics. “To understand how the solar wind interacts with the Earth, or to generate clean energy from nuclear fusion, one has to understand how plasma—a soup of […]

China’s ‘Artificial Sun’ Brings Nuclear Fusion One Step Closer, Breaking World Record

It’s time to wake up and smell the plasma, as thermonuclear fusion energy inches closer and closer to reality. In its quest to develop unlimited green energy, the EAST Fusion Facility in Heifei, China recently created a plasma gas that was heated to 120° million Celsius—that’s three-times hotter than the sun—and kept it there for […]

The World Has Achieved Huge Milestones in 6 Areas of Renewable Energy So Far This Year

Despite a few national governments continuing to keep their coal and oil projects afloat, market demand and private entrepreneurship is driving what can only be described as a revolution in renewable energy. These latest achievements might have been thought unbelievable when global climate change was first being discussed as a serious threat, but today each […]

Membrane proteins of bacteria and humans show surprising similarities

(Johannes Gutenberg Universitaet Mainz) The cells of simple organisms, such as bacteria, as well as human cells are surrounded by a membrane, which fulfills various tasks including protecting the cell from stress. Researchers have now discovered that a membrane protein found in bacteria has a similar structure and function as a group of proteins that are responsible for remodeling and rebuilding the cell membrane in humans. No connection between the two protein groups was known before.

Quaise Inc. drilling technology could allow geothermal to power the world

(Science Communications) Geothermal energy systems have the potential to power the world and become the leading technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions if we can drill down far enough into the Earth to access the conditions necessary for economic viability and release the heat beneath our feet. Quaise Inc. is developing a potentially disruptive drilling technology to make that happen. Matt Houde of Quaise presented the approach at the World Geothermal Congress on June 15.
