Scientists Get $1 Million Prize to Fight Climate Change With ‘Photosynthesis 2.0’ – The Wall Street Journal

A team of German scientists want to improve on nature to create a more efficient way of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Tobias Erb, managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology, was awarded Wednesday a roughly $1 million prize for leading efforts to engineer enzymes that could make photosynthesis—the process by which plants use energy from the sun to grow—more efficient. Dr. Erb said the technology his team has developed could eventually allow captured carbon dioxide to be used to make new chemical building blocks for products such as fuel, antibiotics or even food.
