COP26 Host Expresses Concern a Day Before Talks End

The president of the United Nations climate summit warned that a lot more work needed to be done, and that government ministers negotiating in Glasgow needed to “dial up” their engagement.

I want to be clear: We are not there yet. There is still a lot more work to be done. And I know just how hard you are all working, but today must represent another gear shift where negotiators finalize outstanding technical work and ministers dial up their engagement. Because, and I remind colleagues again, COP26 is scheduled to close at the end of tomorrow. I am concerned at the number of issues outstanding on finance items the day before we are due to conclude. Our leaders were clear at the start of this summit. They want us to show ambition and build consensus, and yet we still see that in the finance rooms, we are struggling to make progress even with some routine technical issues. This, my friends, cannot be the case today. We must make progress, and we must show willingness to find common ground. The world is watching us, and they’re willing us to work together and reach consensus. And we know that we cannot afford to fail them.
