Letter: Climate change requires action – The Columbian
If you were to imagine a temperature at the North Pole that would prove to you there is global climate change, what would that temperature be? Don’t read on yet. Think of a temperature in the Arctic Circle that would prove to you there is global warming. Ready? In June 2020 north of the Arctic Circle, the Siberian town of Verkhoyansk hit 100.4 degrees. Over 100 degrees. Also, the ice is melted enough to make it easy for ships to travel across the North Pole throughout most of the year.
So, what do we do about global climate change? It will take a lot of different actions done by many different entities: individuals, companies, governments. Some changes will be huge, but some are small, including using your own tableware and straws rather than using plasticware from restaurants, either dining in or with takeout. Support companies that have good environmental practices, contact companies that don’t, and contact governmental officials to support pro-environment legislation. Be part of making our world better.
