Letter: Tackling global warming now could lessen future ‘extreme weather’ – Independent Mail
The first raised concerns about the ability of our citizens to evacuate safely, an immediate concern in the days and hours before storms hit. One long-term factor in creating storms of increasing intensity and frequency is global warming.
We have to plan for natural disasters in the short term, but address the long term by reducing the burning of fossil fuels to slow the warming of the planet.
One solid proposal is the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (HR 763,) a bill in Congress now, that would reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and encourage innovation in the clean energy sector.
Taking steps to keep ourselves safe when the next hurricane hits is our responsibility, as is driving down carbon pollution and bringing climate change under control.
