Sir, You report on the increasing concerns about the impact of aviation on global warming (“Why I’ve seen the light on the environment”, Comment, Jun 27, and News, “Aircraft leave a trail of climate destruction”, Jun 28), so it would seem sensible to discourage growth in flying. Cancelling the plans for the third runway at Heathrow would be an obvious first step. If there were also a move towards taxing aviation fuel to the same extent as petrol at the filling station this would bring home to flyers the costs of this transportation and provide the exchequer with funds for public services.
