LETTER TO THE EDITOR: We have only one planet to share with future… – Bemidji Pioneer
Please listen to your own scientists, Mr. President. Global warming is actually part of what is causing our record-breaking cold weather. It is the gradual increase of the earth’s atmospheric temperature (mostly due to the emission of heat-trapping greenhouse gases). Because the earth’s climate is changing so rapidly, the environment is prone to extreme weather events, including these uncharacteristically cold winters.
While “weather” refers to atmospheric conditions during a shorter period, “climate” is the extended view of weather patterns. Linking weather in one location to the existence of global warming/climate change is entirely inaccurate; akin to saying world hunger is no longer an issue, because I just ate.
At the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris, 195 countries agreed to pollution-cutting provisions with a goal of preventing global temperature from rising. Unfortunately, in 2017 President Trump withdrew from the agreement in order to eliminate what he viewed as “harmful and unnecessary policies such as the Climate Action Plan.”
Republican or Independent or Democrat, we have only one planet to share with our future generations. The leader of the greatest country on earth has to be more aware of our environment. Main Street should rule over Wall Street.
